I have a new phone

Post by PolySoup on Sun Dec 18, 2011 7:49 pm

I used it to make this post. Did you know that you don't seem to get the "New Topic" button if you view the mobile version of the site?

Edit: You don't get the edit or reply buttons either.

I didn't at first but it turned out to be because I hadn't signed in. Once I did that they were there.

I still didn't get them. Only in the full view, not the mobile view.

Hey, this thread seems like the right place for this.

Some of you might remember I was talking about possibly switching over to the hand-me-down iphone 3G S I got from my brother. (From this - note the date.) I actually still haven't got around to it, but I was having a look to see if there were any decent free GPS programs for the iphone, and found this:

Navfree

It sounds pretty good. Does anyone have any experience with it? Or with any other GPS software for iphones, I guess?

I finally got around to switching on that iphone, and thought I'd try installing that GPS program on it (after I deleted the ~10Gb (!) of music my brother had on there so I'd have room). I had to create an Apple ID of course so I could get stuff from the app store, but it turns out it doesn't actually let you use it unless you have a credit card to associate with it (and I don't have or want one).

The official method to creating an account without a credit card attached is just that; you have to create a new one - not use an existing one, like the one I created five minutes prior - and try to install a free app. Now I can't just create a new account because my e-mail address is already associated with my existing one. Looks like I'll need to get one of those itunes gift/recharge/whatever cards if I want to be able to actually use this account and download some free programs (that's apparently another way to get past the 'review your new account' blockade).

I'm sort of annoyed right now. Not having a great experience with Apple/iphones so far.

i've never used an iPhone before, but you don't need to put your credit card details in to get free apps with android

Alright, I've switched over to the iphone now. Turns out the sim card in my old phone was the right size after all. I also grabbed an itunes card, so I can properly use my Apple ID on the app store now. It is nice to have access to something with so much choice.

I tried out navfree briefly. Seems pretty good (especially for free), though it does seem to get small banner ads at the top or bottom of the screen sometimes. The only potentially not-so-good thing I've noticed so far is that it requires a data connection to search for addresses. Hopefully it won't be too much of am issue; I usually do the searching and route-planning before I leave home anyway, and the phone connected to my wireless network without any problems.

I've also installed 'I can't believe it's not Bookworm Adventures' (Bee Spelled - the free version). Wink

I just need to get a car charger and a windscreen mount for the phone now.
