It was conspicuously missing tanks. I still like the panzerkleins though (I know I'm in the minority).

I'm with Phil on this one. I've never finished SS, I always stopped shortly after the PK's appeared. I didn't mind the first couple of PK missions where you didn't have access to them and had to find ways of taking them down, just for the challenge, but they felt really out of place overall.
I think if there had been more sci-fi elements (even if only a couple) in the game than just the PKs I might have felt differently about them, but as it was it was just "Suddenly, Battlemechs appeared!"

It was doing pretty well up to them. And its not like they where foreshadowed or anything. It just felt a bit late into the game to be addind something like that.

It might have something to do with the character type you chose.
My character was a scout (sneaking up to the enemys using melee). Since there were no future tech melee weapons all of my skills were useless

There were panzerklein melee weapons, from memory... but I don't think scouts had any skills that applied to panzerkleins, no. My main character was a sniper in both Silent Storm and Sentinels (since if your character goes down it's an instant game over, it made sense to have him as far away from combat as possible), but I had one of each class type in my squad. So several of them were good in panzerkleins; my character in a sniper panzerklein was near-unstoppable.

Yeah, I think the melee weapons were in the 2nd one. I kept my main character (sniper) out of PKs and bled PK pilots to death with headshots

I think one of the things about SS (& SSS) that I loved that is not in JA:BiA is just how destructible everything was. If you were a little indiscriminate with explosives there were a couple of missions you would have to restart because you accidentally destroyed the only staircase.
